Joshua and a Personal Sense of Destiny - Part 3

  The Junior Tree of Life

BEFORE we begin, if you are a believer in Jesus Christ, take a moment to name your sins to God the Father. This will allow you to be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit as you read this booklet ( EPH 5:18 & 1JO 1:9).
IF YOU HAVE never believed in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you have that opportunity right now. Simply tell God the Father that you are believing on His Son
Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. If you make that
decision, you are now a believer and will always be a child of God! When you die, you will spend eternity with Him forever in heaven! (JOH 3:16 & ACT 16:31).

In our study of Joshua, we’re now at the point in the story where he sent two men to check out Jericho in the land of Canaan. As we learned, Joshua has been chosen by God to take Moses’ place as leader of the Israelites; and God had commanded him to lead the children of Israel into the Promised Land and establish a nation. This is why he sent the spies out. When the spies returned from their mission, they had great news to report, especially because of what the woman Rahab told them.

Her words are found in JOS 2:8-11: “I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land have melted away before you. For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed. When we heard it, our hearts melted and no courage remained in any man any longer because of you; for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.” The Israelite’s faith was strengthened and they were encouraged that what they were doing was in God’s plan.

Joshua knew in his heart that the Lord had given the land to them and that He was responsible for the people being frightened of the Israelites. He knew that all of the wild and amazing things that happened as the Israelites marched toward the Promised Land into Canaan were miracles of God! These miracles are what caused the people who opposed the Hebrews to become afraid. One of the miracles was the parting of the Red Sea. And not only did God part the Red Sea, He also parted the Jordan River! This was a widely talked-about event which is recorded in JOS 5:1: Now it came about when all the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan to the west, and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea, heard how the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the sons of Israel until they had crossed, that their hearts melted, and there was no spirit in them any longer because of the sons of Israel. Do you see how the Lord works behind the scenes as believers fulfill their personal sense of destiny? Always remember that He will do the same for you, as you move forward in His Plan to fulfill your personal destiny.

Further on in the book of Joshua, we read that Joshua actually meets up with the Captain of God's army - the Lord Jesus Christ! Now it came about when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man was standing opposite him with his sword drawn in his hand, and Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us or for our adversaries?” He said, “No; rather I indeed come now as captain of the host of the Lord.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and bowed down, and said to him, “What has my lord to say to his servant?” The captain of the Lord’s host said to Joshua, “Remove your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so. (JOS 5:13-15) In this passage, Our Lord appears before Joshua as a warrior ready to go into battle. This is why we read that His sword is drawn. When this happened, Joshua truly began to understand his destiny. The Lord used Joshua’s skill and obedience to lead the people in an occupation (take-over) of the Promised Land.

As a part of our destiny, the Lord waits until our spiritual skills are developed — just like he did with Joshua! You will grow spiritually by studying Bible Doctrine and using it in your life. Once you’ve grown, God will guide and use you to fulfill His Will. Spiritual skills must come before production skills. In other words, you have to develop spiritual skills before God will use you to fulfill His Will.

And do you know what happened to Joshua? The Lord was with him when he DEFEATED Jericho and news of what he did spread throughout all of Canaan.  So the Lord was with Joshua, and his fame was in all the land. (JOS 6:27) And this is what can happen to ANY believer who remains in God’s plan to fulfill his or her destiny! Even you! In JOS 11:15, we read: Just as the Lord had commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did; he left nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses. The book of Joshua, as in the case of all Old Testament writings, "was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope." (ROM 15:4). Learning about Joshua’s life gives encouragement to positive believers. And it helps them stick to the Plan of God.

The book of Joshua is like the New Testament epistle of Paul to the Church at Ephesus. In the book of Ephesians, the apostle Paul teaches that God has promised us great things; but we will only receive these blessings after conflict and defeat - just like Joshua. This means that as we grow spiritually, we’ll have difficult times that we’ll have to get through. And we cannot and should not become overwhelmed by them. If we do, we won’t receive the blessings! When times get tough, we have to be strong and have faith!! God has designed blessings which go beyond what you could ever imagine! Whenever you’re stressed or afraid about your future, remember problem-solving device number six - personal sense of destiny! You’ll be glad you did!
